A Simulation Built for Modern Learning

6.png

InsiderHire is an innovative simulation created for career development centers to better educate and coach students on the recruiting process. Developed by a fellow career coach, it was born from the need to influence student behavior rather than simply educate students on career concepts.

If you've ever grown tired of explaining why networking is important, why no resume should look the same, or why employers seek soft skills, keep reading.

By immersing students in the recruiter role, InsiderHire provides answers through experience rather than explanation. This simulation offers students a deeper understanding of the hiring process and equips them with practical strategies to:

  • Craft tailored, impactful applications

  • Build meaningful, time-efficient connections with recruiters and alumni

  • Align their skills with what employers are seeking, and

  • Stand out with confidence in interviews.

Why InsiderHire Works

The Science Behind the Simulation

5.png

Grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior,
InsiderHire addresses the key factors that influence action:

  • Intention toward behavior: Students gain firsthand insight into the benefits of tailoring their resumes, networking, and refining their interview skills, motivating them to take action.

  • Subjective norms: The simulation helps students understand the expectations of recruiters, what is valued, and why they should adapt their approach.

  • Perceived behavioral control: InsiderHire provides a safe, guided environment for students to develop knowledge and provides resources on how to move forward.

Harnessing the Power of Emotion
Research shows that emotions play a critical role in learning and decision-making:

  • Emotions enhance attention, memory, reasoning, and problem-solving (Vuilleumier, 2005; Phelps, 2004; Isen et al., 1987; Jung et al., 2014).

  • InsiderHire leverages emotion through engaging scenarios that mimic real-world recruiting challenges, making the learning experience memorable and impactful.

Facilitating Real-World Transfer
For skills learned in an academic or training setting to effectively transfer to real-world decision-making, emotion-related processes are essential (Immordino-Yang, 2007). InsiderHire bridges this gap by immersing students in realistic, emotionally resonant situations that prepare them to face similar challenges during their job search.

Impactful Results

Pre-and post-simulation data from over 500 students shows a strong shift in their job search strategies as a result of this immersive experience.

Message from the creator

As a Career Coach, I found myself repeatedly asking myself why students rely on ineffective job search strategies despite being taught the exact opposite. (LinkedIn Quick Apply with the same resume, anyone?)

I realized I was great at teaching the how-to’s and providing resources - but without offering the context and experiential learning - we won't truly inspire and motivate lasting behavioral change. That realization sparked the creation of the InsiderHire Simulation.

Thank you for caring enough about student success to read this far. I hope this simulation transforms your students’ journeys as profoundly as it has transformed mine. Facilitating the simulation is also super fun. Enjoy!
